- Please tell about your life before poker and after poker & How and why poker venture came in your mind
I worked for a number of years in the banking industry as a consultant to top brands like Wipro, Birla, WNS and Standard Chartered Bank. On a trip to Macau, I came across the sport of poker in one of the casinos there and really enjoyed the game. The business side of it also intrigued me and I brought that back with me to India where I started to pursue this. Soon enough I partnered up with Rajeev Kanjani, Sameer Rattonsey and Peter Abraham at the India Poker Championship. This same team then scaled up live poker like the way the e-commerce industry does and that is how Spartan Poker was born. We have enjoyed a lot of success and goodwill as a result of our ventures and I am personally glad that our combined set of brands are a part of Indian poker’s growth story.
- Spartan Poker is your baby, what’s your vision on this?
We aim to be the country’s number one gaming platform. Our start has been in poker but we hope to be a well-rounded entity which has many product offerings in the real money gaming space.
- Where do you see the poker industry in five years from today?
Recent reports by KPMG suggest that the Indian gaming industry is expected to hit about INR 12,000 Crores in the next 5 years. Cheap mobile internet plans and the deeper penetration of smartphones will lead the way for the Indian gaming sector. Poker too will be a part of this burgeoning wave and if there is a positive regulatory push from the government, I wouldn’t be surprised if this boom takes place in less than 5 years.
- Why Spartan Poker is best and different from other’s in the industry
Spartan Poker identifies itself as the home of poker tournaments in India. As players, the core team enjoyed this format of the sport when we started. We knew the kind of value we expect from brands when we were players and that really drives us to provide immense value in our tournament offerings. There are several Spartan signature tournaments like the Millionaire, Destiny, 2.o.K and series like the India Online Poker Championship (IOPC) and Spartan Super Series (SSS) which have elevated the standard of online poker tournaments in the country. This is certainly an important aspect to Spartan Poker’s top positioning in the market.
- What’s the upcoming events and tournaments from Spartan Poker
We just got done with the second edition of the IOPC a few weeks ago and now the SSS will be coming up in September. This month will see the Spartan Value series taking place from 18-25 August which will feature lower buy-ins and terrific guarantees. We also have the IPC live event in Goa from 11-15 September for which Spartan is presenting sponsor. We are currently hosting satellite qualifiers which is ongoing till the start of the event.
- Lot’s of poker players are complaining about poker regulations and TDS related issues, what actions you think govt. should take to regulate this.
As mentioned earlier a positive regulatory environment will allow the Indian gaming industry to thrive and of course, that will translate into more revenue for the government coffers. A professional career in the real money gaming space or e-sports is no longer unheard of so player concerns regarding their livelihood is natural. There can certainly be a solution for these matters if the concerned authorities put their heads together.
- As now you’re one of the most powerful personality and successful in poker this industry, how you feel this, and is there any pressure on you to keep your flow.
Well, there is always pressure on the work front but that is to be expected in any industry. Our goal at Spartan is to make sure we give as much value to players as we possibly can and then rest will fall into place. There is a lot of hard work, determination and patience that goes into being successful but if you have your eyes on the prize, things have a way of working out.
- Now, you have also stepped in the entertainment industry with first successful video Sajni Ve, how was your experience and how you see yourself in next 5 years
Haha, I’m still very much a part of the poker industry first. Sajni Ve was an interesting opportunity that came my way courtesy of a few good friends. It was an enjoyable experience and good to work with such a professional team during the making of the video. I’m not sure if this will be a regular thing but I will be open to anything interesting in the entertainment space should it come my way.
- You are the role model for many young minds and entrepreneurs like me please share some important aspects of life and success with us.
It is important to have a clear plan about what you want to achieve and then break that down into smaller, achievable portions. It is equally, if not more important, to execute those plans. Be sure you analyze everything planned action’s outcome, build on its successes and avoid the failures the next time around. Your success is dependent on many people so make sure you have people who are aligned with your vision. While you can keep fretting and overanalyzing your failures, always take out time to celebrate the wins, both small and big as this is what will keep you going. Lastly, be sure you keep fit as a healthy body is a key to a healthy and well-functioning mind.
- Please share some tips and things to follow for all poker players, especially amateur players.
If you are just starting out in poker, do it correctly. What I mean is educate yourself about the game. Like any sport, the more knowledge you have the better it makes your game. The internet has plenty of wonderful and free resources for study and when you reach intermediate and advanced levels in your poker journey, you can certainly choose paid subscriptions of video training sites or even hire a coach to improve your performance.
I always recommend amateur players to begin by playing freerolls as you do not need to spend a single rupee and you can pick up the game and build your bankroll without any risk.
- We can see your love for travel & fitness can you tell more about this part of your life.
Travel is not only a wonderful way to see the world but also connect with different people and broaden your perspective. As that saying goes, “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”
Fitness has been very important to me but it has really picked up in the last 5 years. A fit body is important for a fit mind. If I am in the best physical shape possible, I know my mind will more often than not function at the highest level, so I try and make sure I eat right and hit the gym every single day. I like to mix out my workouts as well so it does not get too boring to do the same routine.
- Please do share all your social media links
- Lastly, 2-3 lines from you for Urban Poker
We need more resources and platforms to spread the word about the sport of poker in this country so I’m sure Urban Poker will be a good addition to this. All the best to the Urban Poker team!
